The 29-year-old Frenchman Richard Gasquet reached the quarter-finals of his home Grand Slam, what he had never done in 12 previous campaigns with his defeat of Kei Nishikori.
“[I was] just motivated to play in the fourth round against one of the biggest players in the world with all the crowd cheering for me in Paris [on the] biggest stage in the world for a French player. That’s why I really wanted to win this match,”-said Richard on press conference.
The No.2 seed Andy Murray reached 20 quarter-finals in his last 21 Grand Slams carving out a businesslike 7-6(9), 6-4, 6-3 victory over John Isner on Sunday in two hours 40 minutes.
“To be honest, I’m pumped to be in the quarters of a Slam. Obviously, the atmosphere will be tough but I don’t mind that. I played a number of times against French players here in difficult atmospheres and I managed okay.”
