WTA INDIAN WELLS – Serena Williams sets up a clash with Simona Halep in Quarterfinals

World No.1 Serena Williams has booked her spot in the Quarterfinals of the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells with a straight sets 6-2, 6-2 win over Kateryna Bondarenko and will face fifth seed Simona Halep for a place in the semifinals.

Williams had beaten her 29-year-old opponent two times in straight sets in the past but their last meeting was more than 6 years back, a long time ago. But 21-time Grand Slam champion showed same dominance as she broke her opponent twice to go 5-1 up in the first set.

The Ukrainian got one break back but Williams broke her again to take the first set 6-2. In the second set Williams raced to a 4-0 lead and once again Bondarenko got one break back. Williams broke Bondarenko at 2-5 in second set as well to finish the match in 1 hour and 12 minutes. Her Quarterfinals opponent Simona Halep took the first set 6-3 against Barbora Strycova and was leading 1-0 in the second set when the Czech player retired due to illness.

Former World No.1 Jelena Jankovic was beaten in straight sets 6-3, 6-3 by Agnieszka Radwanska, who registered seventh win in ninth meeting against the Serb. Radwanska will face 2-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova now, who came back from one set down to outdo American qualifier Nicole Gibbs in 3 sets 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.

Another former World No.1 and 2-time Australian Open champion Victoria Azarenka got better of 2011 US Open champion Samantha Stosur in 3 sets 6-1, 4-6, 6-1. She will face World No.97 Magdalena Rybarikova who won the first set 6-2 against ninth seed Roberta Vinci and was 2-0 up in the second set, when the Italian retired due to left ankle injury.

18-year-old Russian Daria Kasatkina kept her run going as she knocked out the 12th seed Timea Bacsinszky in straight sets 6-4, 6-2. She will face 18th seed Karolina Pliskova next, who eded Great Britain’s Johanna Konta in 3 sets 7-6 (2) 3-6 6-3.
