Alexander Zverev: Rules of Life – Tennismood

Alexander Zverev’s Quotes

  • Nothing can distract me.
  • I always enjoy playing at home. It’s that simple. I mean I always enjoy having the crowd behind me, I always enjoy playing in front of a big crowd. So, for me it’s always quite nice to play here and to play in Hamburg obviously as well. So, I really love both of these tournaments.
  • I’ve been called the “possible future No. 1” by a growing number of people, including Rafael Nadal. It’s nice to hear from people like them, something like that. Because they know what it takes to get there. And if they see the potential in me, that’s great, but I know that I’m a long way away from that. And there are a lot of young guys who are playing very good tennis at the moment.
  • It was not like somebody pushed me into the sport; I always wanted to play myself, I always wanted to beat Mischa. It was always a nice competition between the two of us.
  • I’m not going to change and get the emotions out of my game. It’s important to have emotions in sport. If you don’t have emotions, it’s like you don’t really care. Because if you care about something, you’re always going to be emotional. Doesn’t matter if it’s sports or personal life.
  • It’s not the only reason why I play, but obviously it’s nice to see that other people also want young people to get into the sport and be successful. It’s great to see that a lot of young guys can make it up there quite quickly now. I think we have a group of guys who can be up there soon. I think we all know that we have a lot of hard work still ahead of us. We’re not where we all want to be. We have a lot of physical work ahead of us, a lot of tennis work ahead of us. So I think the one who is going to do the most work is the one who is going to be the most successful.
  • When mom tells you to wake up you would be just acting like you don't hear it

  • There’s no big secret to training. But different body, different training. With me, you have to build muscles but also stay flexible and stay kind of soft which I am naturally. All my big swings, you can’t really tighten that up as much. Physically the top players are on a different level to other players and that’s why they’re on the top. That’s what I’m working on and what I will work on in the off-season.
  • The first thing I do when I get some alone time I checked my text messages. Mischa, my brother, sent me a lot of texts so I responded to him.
  • I feel badly that most people just want to ask my brother about me. But I think he quite enjoys it. He’s someone who doesn’t like to take attention to himself as much so he likes to be a little bit on the side, which I don’t think is very fair. He’s a great tennis player himself. He’ll be back into the Top 100 as well.

  • Mischa has obviously given me a lot of advice about negotiating life on tour.
  • I just want to be the best player I can be. It doesn’t mean that I have to be No. 1, it doesn’t mean that I have to be a Grand Slam champion. Of course, that’s what I’m looking for, that’s what all of our young guys’ work is for. That’s my ultimate goal, but I want to be the best I can, and always work hard.
  • I’ve always been a Roger fan. I’ve always been watching him play since I was a little kid. I always watched him play the big matches and win the big tournaments.
  • My first tennis memory … I was like a year old and I was always taking a little tennis racquet and just playing with balls in the apartment. I guess that’s my first.
  • I love playing tennis because it’s one on one sport. You don’t get that in any other sport really. The closest you get is probably boxing. You still have your coaches and your team in your corner telling you what to do and stuff. I think tennis all depends on yourself. And that’s something fantastic about tennis.
