I’m a very positive person. I’m never getting down too much on myself. I know that there is a life besides tennis. So I’m really trying to be fast to forgive all the losses, just to forget it, just move forward.
I was not thinking about being tired. I was just thinking that this is my chance, and I had to use it.
It was like a dream came true. Semifinal is a big surprise for me. I’m always thinking I can do well in the Grand Slams. I had some good wins. I was close to be in the quarterfinal couple times, but it was not good enough. I was just waiting and waiting for this happen.
I’m really happy that (her defeats) it didn’t break me up. I think the difficult times, every single player has to go through it because it makes you better. It makes you stronger.
Now I’m close to 30; most of you are thinking that it’s end of the career. But look at Venus. Look at Serena. It just depends on how you feel and how you want to keep going.
Serena (Williams), I’m admiring her. I’m always watching. She’s best player in the world. I respect both Serena and Venus. What they bring to the sport is just incredible.
Nothing can be better than playing against Serena in a semifinal on Centre Court at Wimbledon. It’s special. Of course, I need to try to win this match.
It was my dream (to work as zoo veterinarian) when I was a kid, I brought home a lot of birds, cats etc. Now I am not sure about that, probably tennis will stay in my life for a very long time, I simply love this game, playing and watching.
After my shoulder injury I thought I would start playing better a bit sooner, but it’s not easy. It takes a lot of time and of course confidence is important.
I’m not that kind of person who’s going to be down, crying in the locker room.
I like when people are tough. A lot of things coming at the same time and it feels like it’s over – when they keep fighting. Learning from their situations. Thinking, have to be stronger mentally. And then, so many people when they were just starting their careers, they had so many crashes and kind of bad moments. They were still believing in themself. And they got it in the end. There’s a lot of examples. Even the greatest scientists, like Einstein, he wasn’t a very good student. From (music) composing also. Poets also. In the beginning of their careers, nobody knows about them. And then at the end they were like the greatest poets in the world. I know some Russians like this. There was, are composers everybody was saying he was a loser and then he like…(like Capriati epitomized this in tennis.) Yeah, she was. Those are the kind of people I admire!
In school I was playing volleyball. I like that sport a lot. My mom was track and field. She was running. Not on the high level, but she was still…
It (travelling) really helps your brain to relax and see something else than tennis courts and gyms and the hotels.
I like challenges. I like competing against other players. And winning tournaments, raising the trophy, it’s something amazing. It’s kind of a high that you can get and winning as many matches as I can. Trying to get better. Trying to get stronger, faster, all things to be a better athlete on the court than I am right now.
To beat Venus in Wimbledon is just something amazing. I think this is the biggest win in my career.
It is important to play my game and believe until the end. Even now, Venus is not in the top 10, but you can still feel she can be back again.
Tennis is a complex sport, the outcome is affected by so many factors. Even if you took something, not the fact that there will be deterioration in other parameters. Although I am not an expert in pharmaceuticals and this issue may be wrong.
It’s special. You have to show your best tennis. You have to stick to your game, you have to be solid, and you have to enjoy yourself on the court.
Sometimes you can’t even finish your serve before the ball is passing you.
I’m really enjoying myself of court, and even [though] I know I have to play through the qualies, I’m not feeling like it’s something bad for me. I’m feeling like it’s really good for me, so I have some more matches and especially at the beginning of the clay court season — the red clay court season you need these matches, so I’m just trying to think match by match improving my game on the clay.
I’m always enjoying playing singles and doubles and I really think doubles helps a lot to your singles game. Even when you have a bad week on your singles, you still can go back on the court in doubles and get some wins under your belt.
Support native people – one of the best incentives. Me throughout career taught by great mentors. And dad was always there. The main coach is not claimed, but always listened, studied, got second higher education on the profession of sports coach. Plus it feels very good to me, knows what words to say and when.
I don’t think it was the right decision to take all the athletes from Olympics. Because for them it’s something that they are dreaming all their life, they are practicing for years to get there and to get any medal they can, and it’s really — I feel sad. So sorry.
Olympic Games, it’s totally different competition. You’re playing not for yourself. You’re playing for your country; you’re playing for your family, for your nation. It just brings you goosebumps.
I like the spirit of the Olympic Games because everybody is competitive and everybody supporting each other. Other sports they come and support other athletes. It’s just amazing.
It (her typical day) starts with a good breakfast with oatmeal, fruits and cappuccino. Then, morning practice, lunch, nap, another practice, and if I am at home, dinner with my friends in some nice quite restaurant or movie time.
There’s a few girls (about friends in tennis) who are good friends but I can’t tell that they are really close friends, just good friends of tennis.
In the game, I have to be tough and harsh, because otherwise you cannot win. In daily life, I am active, but gentle man.
Very inspiring moment for me was when I was nine. And Yevgeny Kafelnikov came by practice. And I was practicing with his father at that moment. And he came for practice. And he was watching a little bit and he gave me some advices. I don’t remember what it was. He was kind of interested in that. And for me he was the best player in the world in that moment. Of course, for me he was huge.
I have good memories when I came in 2013 when I won the title. It was a big thing for me, especially this tournament. You can see how many legends were winning this tournament. We have some pictures in the player lounge, and you can see Martina Navratilova, Davenport, like big, big players winning here. Of course, it gives you confidence.
After the wedding came more confidence. I am happy to play, I’m happy. For women it is very important!
My favorite Ice Cream Flavor is “Vanilla and mango”.
Everybody had this kind of time when you’re down and you’re thinking that it’s. You’re never going to be there, and you’re watching tennis on the TV, how everybody’s winning and playing semifinals, finals of the Grand Slams.
I’ve had so many congratulations (after winning her maiden title in Hobart, Australia). For example, Andy Murray came up and congratulated me. He said that ‘at last I won a title.’ It was very nice’… It partly helped me to perform well on the Australian Open, but I said: “Guys, all thanks, I am very happy, but now it is the Australian Open and should be prepared for the next match!”
