I always say: “Dream big, work hard.” Have that image in your head and work your ass off to get there.
I’m just working on what I can do to try to become as good as I can and have the results I want, but it doesn’t always go your way.
I’m trying to improve and get better for the future. The specific result of one match, of course is important, but no one dies out there. It’s always good to get some perspective and that helps me with nerves.
I’m very hard on myself. When I lost in the Wimbledon finals, I was so sad, I cried. I had the runner-up trophy! It’s still a great accomplishment, but I was so mad. Everyone told me, ‘Genie, you had great two weeks. Come on.’ I was like, ‘Yeah, but I didn’t win the title. I don’t deserve any of this.’ My goal is to always win the title.
Before a match, I always do a good warm-up. I want to make sure I’m sweating before I get on the court so that I’m warm and ready as soon as the match starts.
I always try to remind myself that things can happen when you least expect them to. You just have to keep working hard and suddenly things will click. That’s the experience that I’ve had in my career. I trust that if I’m doing the right things and I’m on the right path, even if times are tough, eventually I’ll reach my goal.
I live very much in the moment. I don’t think too much about the future or retiring at 30; I can’t even thinking about being 30. I want to be young forever.
Before a match, if I’m nervous, I’ll talk to my coach and we’ll discuss the strategy, but also that I should realize that this is just a tennis match.
I know that the better I play, the more attention I’ll get. I’m a tennis player, and if I can’t perform well on the tennis court, no one will pay attention. I have my mother who keeps me grounded and my siblings who don’t treat me any differently. That’s important to have.
I love interacting with my fans. The creation of the Genie Army is incredible. These boys in Melbourne started this kind of worldwide revolution where at every tournament, there’s some form of the Genie Army. Kids have painted their bodies or T-shirts. I just have to remind myself that they support me and it’s actually really nice to have.
I know I just have to force food down my throat even if I feel sick because I am burning so many calories.
I always have my energy bars and energy gels [on hand]. And bananas, definitely. All tennis players eat like five bananas a day.
I’m not a cooking person, so there’s not much in the fridge. On the rare occasion that I do cook, I make myself breakfast. Eggs are my go-to in the morning for some protein. Orange juice as well. You have to start your day off with that.
Sleep is part of my job because I need a certain number of hours of sleep to be able to train at the intensity that I do. I’m constantly working to keep my body in the best possible shape.
When I do have some free time, I lie on the couch and relax, physically and mentally. It’s important to take time away from tennis. When I can, I head to Montreal to visit my family. I’m not there often because I train in Florida. I miss my siblings, but it’s the sacrifice I’ve made.
I love going to the beach and swimming in the ocean. It’s so relaxing. It’s also a great form of active recovery. It’s perfect for those rest days when you still want to move a little bit.
Someone that I’m really inspired by, and that I look up to, is Oprah (Winfrey). It’s amazing how she created such an empire. I love those inspiring stories. I would just ask her what it was like and what she would say to herself to keep believing or keep going when times are tough.
I don’t wear makeup when I’m on the court because I’m an athlete and I don’t think that’s suitable. I love wearing it when I’m off-court or at events, but for me it’s so important to protect my skin from the sun. Especially as a tennis player, I’m in the sun all the time.
I love Chanel and Vetements. For shoppable clothes, ASOS is great to find missing pieces and build your wardrobe that way. I love Céline as well, for bags as well as shoes. Since I travel so much, I go on my phone a lot and read fashion blogs or shop online. It’s a good way to pass time.
If I’m feeling lazy and I don’t want to go do those sprints, I’ll imagine my ultimate goals: I want to win the Grand Slam [and] lift up a trophy. Having a picture in your head can help anyone to take those little steps every day to get there.
I prefer male body wash to female body wash. It cleans better and it doesn’t have those crazy flowery smells I can’t deal with. I like smelling like a man!
Fashion is important. The court is a stage to express personal style.
I did not have a normal life. I’d be training when my sister would be at birthday parties and sleepovers. I finished high school by correspondence, basically working two full-time jobs. The last years were very, very tough. But I was willing to do that. It’s all about sacrifice.
I’m naturally an emotional person. When I make a mistake, I’m obviously disappointed in myself, but I can’t dwell on it. I’ve learned not to dwell on the mistake while I’m playing because that will just lead to more mistakes. It’s a vicious cycle. I can’t afford to be an emotional rollercoaster.
I spend most of my time on the tennis court. I wake up at 8 and eat eggs for the protein, fruits, and orange juice. Then I hit the tennis court for two hours working mainly on my technique. After lunch, I spend about another two hours on the tennis court before heading to the gym.
As a tennis player, I have to work on my strength and cardio. I find the game of tennis has become more physical, and players are spending more time at the gym.
I want to be young! I have this fear of getting old, so I always want to make sure I’m dressing young because I can’t do that forever and I know that.
I stay calm and consistent. I’m very disciplined and focused; I need to be. If I do something then I’ll commit.
