Ivo Karlovic: RULES OF LIFE – Tennismood

Ivo Karlovic quotes

  • As long as I will be healthy and my ranking will be up like this, there is no reason to stop. I don’t feel any less strong or fast than when I was younger (Now he is 37). I feel really good. Also, I don’t know if it’s the reason, I begin later a little bit. I didn’t reach top 100 when I was 18, 19. I reached little bit later. That’s why I’m not like used up.
  • Every day that I win is unbelievable feeling. And every day if I lose it’s unbelievable shit feeling [smiles]. So, it depends. If you lose, it is here [puts hand low], if you win, it is here [puts hand high].
  • I really like what I do. So if I’m able to do this at my age, it is unbelievable still. I don’t know for how much longer I can do this, but right now I don’t have an issue with injuries. I’m healthy, I’m motivated. So I will go on.

  • I need to be aggressive. I need to use every little opportunity that I have. I mean, you just have to be like really into it, focused, and try to use every little opportunity that you get.
  • It was not easy (about his first obligatory post-match news conference), because everybody wanted to know who am I. It was hard for me to speak in front of a lot of people, and back then it was even worse. But I am glad that I did it, because you just have to do it if you want to become a good player.
  • I’m a lot stronger than a lot of other guys. I achieved very good results, beating because they are able to hit the ball from a point much higher. The biggest drawback, however, is that I have to go down than their opponents. It can be difficult to go up and down especially for me (his height is 2.11 m), because it is really far down. And then the stoop, having to raise the shutter, I understand a difficult move.
  • I do a lot of stretching exercises, just to go down to the net as much as possible. The be as agile, it helps prevent injuries from falls. It ‘s very important as a whole for my game and body.
  • Playing three matches in three days is very hard, especially at 37. But now the situation is not easy for the team, and I knew I was going to be called. I had a different schedule for that period, but I know that the match (the 2016 final between Croatia and Argentina in Zagreb) is very important for the team, for Zagreb, the Croatian tennis and the Croatian sport in general. I have talked to my family and we have decided that I will help as much as I can.
  • It’s a great feeling. I really like what I do. I’m just having fun. So if I’m able to do this at my age, it is unbelievable still.

  • It’s difficult for anyone to notice anything else because my serve is that good. Everything else is going to look worse even though there are parts of my game that are good. My volleys, forehand, even my backhand slice. But if you look it at next to my serve it doesn’t look that unbelievable, that’s how it is.
  • I always like when I’m best at something (he achieved the all-time record number of aces, 65, at the French Open in 2009), so if it’s aces I’m happy about it.
  • When my serve is broken it’s usually because I break myself.
  • Tennis is not something that can really hurt me if I lose, so I cannot say.
  • After I won, I was going to the net to have a handshake and then I look at him (his opponent was Dudi Sela) and he’s going back to get a chair. I didn’t know what he was going to do and then he arrives and he gives me a hug, which was unbelievable and hilarious. Obviously he needed a hug, so I hugged him back.
  • When I was young, my dad (Vlado) said that I was gonna be in some sports. And he said that it would be tennis because it’s no injuries. So he was dragging me to the tennis court. And I was like, ‘No, no, no. I don’t want to go ‘ But after, I like it. So I stayed with it.
  • Hit the ball over the net and pray it falls within the lines (his advice to someone who asked about learning to play tennis).
  • I have been playing for a long time, and there aren’t a lot of guys my age still out there. It feels like something very good. It means a lot.
  • My friends and family know me more this way (he is an online persona, he often answers questions from his fans on Internet). I am not like this when I play, but when I am comfortable with my friends, we laugh a lot.
  • This (driving) is an issue for me because of my height. I like fast cars, but it is hard to fit into them. But right now I have a Dodge Challenger. Black. I love it. The seat goes way back, it looks good and it is fast.
  • I like all different kinds of music. It’s funny, right now I am listening to B. B. King.
  • It is difficult to have a real hobby because like every week we are on the road and professional tennis takes a lot of time. But I like basketball, movies and music. (How about boxing?) Oh yeah, actually, because when I was younger, when I was 16, I was a little bit practicing it. It was only amateur, I was never actually in the ring but I liked it. And because of my long arms, the trainer who had this local club was really, really interested in me changing sports.
  • When I was young I used to practice a lot. Firstly it was because I liked to serve. I grew up watching players like Goran Ivanisevic and Boris Becker and they hit unbelievable serves. And the other reason was because I didn’t have anybody to hit with when I was 14 or 15. I would have to wait until the evening. All the courts were empty, so I would practice my serve a lot during the day.
  • I like lamb when it’s like really nicely cooked.
  • The other day a lady said, ‘Oh my God, you are so tall, you can be a rower (like boat rower).’ So, it was unusual comment [smiles].
